Shipping containers from orbit — how satellite data predicts stock returns in 27 countries

At first this sounds like a technical finance question. Then you look closer and realise it is also a question about attention, incentives, and whether people are using information or just being impressed by it.

Container ports are among the most tangible indicators of economic activity available. When global trade is booming, ports fill with containers. Traditional economic statistics capture this with significant lag — shipping data is published with delays, revised repeatedly, and released on a monthly or quarterly basis. Satellite imagery from orbit, processed at scale using machine learning, offers something different: a real-time proxy for global trade activity that updates daily. The researchers analyse 83,672 satellite images of container ports using the U-Net method — a deep learning architecture designed for image segmentation — to identify and measure container coverage areas in each port. This becomes a proxy for the number of containers, and by extension, for economic activity. The results are striking: container port measurements predict stock index returns in 27 out of 33 countries at daily frequency over the 2019-2021 period. An investor using this satellite data as a trading signal generates an annualised return of approximately 16.38% on average. The predictability works through the economic activity channel — container numbers track growth, and growth tracks equity returns. The methodological contribution here is the marriage of satellite collection, computer vision, and financial economics.

In plain English, that is why the result matters beyond the chart. It changes where people should look, what they should question, and which comfortable assumption probably needs to be retired.

So I would not read this as a neat technology story. It is a messy information story. The tools improve, but people still have to decide what deserves attention. Annoying, but true.
